Toys & Felt Stories

  • Toys and felt stories are special collections at the Kingston Campus Library. A complete list of available toys & felt stories can be found here.
  • They are a 1 week loan and a MAX of 2 can be taken out at a time.
  • Borrowing - patrons NEED to place holds. See instructions here.
    • Holds will be fulfilled Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:00 pm.
    • Holds placed after 4:00 pm will be fulfilled the following morning.
  • NO renewals - this is to make sure that all the pieces are accounted for and the condition of the toy and/or felt story is maintained.

Borrowing Procedure

  • For a patron to borrow a toy or felt story, they must place a HOLD on the item. See the steps below:
  1. Log into the SLC Library Catalogue (Click on "My Library Card" to sign in) 
  2. Go to the Children's Collection page (Click on "Special Collections") 
  3. Select TOYS or FELT STORIES
  4. Select the item you would like.
  5. Under the Get It heading, click on Request (Place Hold). 
  6. Fill in the required information and wait for your pick-up email from SLC Libraries.
  • NOTE: Holds will be fulfilled from 8:00am - 4:00pm Monday to Friday. Holds placed AFTER 4:00pm will be fulfilled the following day. 

Hold Pick Up

  1. Patrons will receive an email letting them know their hold is ready for pick-up.
  2. Holds are arrange by last name. There may be more then 1 item per person. 
  3. Sign out the material as normal. 
  4. Explain to the student that they have 24 hours to let us know if a piece is missing or broken. Recommend counting and checking condition before leaving the library.

Before returning a felt story to Alma

  1. Count all the felt pieces.
    • Check the condition of pieces - missing, torn, water damage, smell, etc.
    • Note any missing/torn pieces.
  2. If included, check if the book or activity sheet is there. 
    • Check the condition.
  3. Make sure the felt board is also there.
    • Check the condition.
  4. a) If everything is accounted for and in good condition, you can return the felt story in Alma.

b) If pieces are missing (especially a book), ask the patron to look for them at their placement or home. 

c) If pieces need repair, please give them to Dom to see what needs to be fixed. 

d) If an item is lost or damaged beyond normal wear and tear, the patron will be charged the replacement cost of
$90.00. (This will be on a case-by-case basis; other arrangements may be made.)

 DO NOT return the felt story! Please make a note of what is missing and give it to Dom.

Shelving Felt Stories

  • Felt stories are to be shelved in alphabetical order based on title. 

       When shelving a felt story that begins with "The", "A", or "An", skip over it and look for the next word in the title.

Example:

1- Dress for the season

2- The foolish tortoise

3- Franklin in the dark

  • Do not stuff the plastic container tight with the felt stories. 
    • It is ok if only 1 felt story is in a clear bin.

Before returning a toy to Alma

  1. Count all the toy pieces.
    • Check the condition of pieces - missing, broken, smell, etc.
    • Note any missing/broken pieces.
  2. Make sure the "St. Lawrence College toy Lending Library Agreement" is in the bag.
  3. a) If everything is accounted for and in good condition, then you can return the toy in Alma.

b) If pieces are missing, ask the patron to look for them at their placement or at home.

c) If an item is lost or damaged beyond normal wear and tear, the patron will be charged the replacement cost of
$90.00. (This will be on a case-by-case basis; other arrangements may be made.)  

DO NOT return the toy! Make a note of what is missing/broken and give it to Dom.

Shelving Toys

  • Toys are shelved based on the number on their tag.
    • The number is highlighted in yellow.
  • Make sure the bags are fully closed. Be gentle!
  • Do not overcrowd the shelves with toys.
