Library Opening Checklist - Kingston

1. Sign into the computer assigned  to you with your SLC employee credentials. 

2. Sign into Alma with the Generic access credentials.

3. Sign into the patron computer with the Kopac 2 credentials and bring up Page 1+.

4. Check drop box for returned books and checkin in Alma, place on shelf for shelving.

5. Open seminar rooms if closed, turn on SmartBoards.

6. Unlock door between Davies Hall and Library.

7. Open front doors at 8:00 AM and change sign to OPEN.

8. Lock drop box beside front doors. 

Library Technician Closing Tasks

  • 8:30 PM: Do a final count and inform people that we close in half an hour.

  • 8:45 PM: Do a walk-through and remind people that we are closing in 15 minutes.

  • 8:55 PM: Do a walk-through and inform people that we are closing in 5 minutes at 9:00 pm. 

  • Unlock drop box. 

  • 9:00 PM: Ensure all patrons have left. Lock front doors, change sign to CLOSED, and turn off lights. Call security if people are not leaving in a timely manner, remain onsite until people are escorted out of the library, then proceed with closing. 

  • Make sure the back door is locked on the way out. 

Library Assistant Daily Tasks - Kingston

1. Be ready to help any patron that comes to the circulation desk or patrons that appear in need of assistance.

2.  Complete frequent rounds of the library to ensure there is no mischief. 

3. Checking in and out of library resources - Please make sure you look at the screen when scanning in:

  • Patron's ID
  • Item checked in or out. Make sure items are being checked in or out to the correct patron. 

The following tasks have priority and are mandatory for all shifts for all bursary students:

  • Outgoing resources get a black stamp with:
    • 3 weeks for the general collection.
    • 1 week for, DVDS, CDs and select books.
    • Same day stamp for reserve items and note time due back.
  • Checked in resources get the red stamp with today's date.
  • Check paper levels in printers frequently and before closing, refill when needed.
  • Check staple levels in staplers frequently and before closing, refill when needed.
  • Dust.
  • Pick up any loose, un-shelved items from the shelves and register usage in Alma. 

The following tasks are secondary priorities to be completed when the priority and mandatory tasks are completed: 

  • Push in chairs around the library.
  • Make sure that each computer, and carrel has one chair.
  • Straighten books on the shelves.
  • Shelf read all collections.
  • Tidying seminar rooms; chairs at table (equal number of chairs in each room) and clear the SmartBoard.
  • Make sure there is no garbage laying around on tables, in study rooms, desk area, etc.

The following tasks are completed when there are no priority and secondary priorities to be completed:

  • Log out of student computers that have been idle for 15 or more minutes.
  • Log out of student computers if they are stuck on the "Do you want to log out" screen.
  • If the student computers are locked and not in use do CTRL-ALT-DEL(ETE) and restart them.

Additional tasks as assigned by Library Technicians: Brenda, Dom, Kat, Sarah, and Christine.

Library Assistant Closing Checklist

  • 5:00 PM:

    • Pickup books & periodicals left in the study carrels, book return shelves etc. Register usage in Alma and interfile on sorting shelves.

    • Check paper supply in the multifunction devices and staff printer. Check staples in staplers. Add if needed. DO NOT OVERFILL!

    • Empty three hole punch. 

  • 7:00/8:00 PM:

    • Shelve any books remaining on sorting shelves. 

    • Check that all student computers are logged out of student accounts and push in chairs. 

  • 8:45 PM: Lock Davies Hall gate. 

  • 8:55 PM:

    • Change date stamps

    • Check each Seminar room, push in chairs and clean Smart Boards and Turn off. 

    • Tuck in all of the chairs at desks and study carrels. 

  • 9:00 PM: 

    • Make sure to close all programs, sign out and restart computer.

    • Place completed "Patron Count Statistics Form" on Dom's desk.
